Message From BDPA Atlanta Chapter President

Happy Holidays from BDPA Atlanta Chapter
2012 Year in Review

Felicia Jones
As 2012 winds down, it’s time to sit back and reflect upon the great and many accomplishments of the BDPA Atlanta Chapter. Our primary focus for 2012 was ‘Building and Growing a Stronger BDPA’. The leadership team placed a very strong emphasis on providing career enhancing programs to our members and the community. We were committed to developing them with technical skills, business-savvy, and personal growth. In this one year timeframe, we
  • Hosted our 3rd Annual Career Fair – The event offered resume makeovers, mock interviews, one on one career coaching and a Critical Success workshop.
  • Created 4 new programs:
    1. Tech Talk Webinar Series – Bi-monthly webinar series which were informational and educational. The webinars were on the latest IT trends, topics and what’s affecting the IT community.
    2. Success Alliance - A professional development support program which helped the individual to define and set their career, business or academic goals
    3. College Liaison Program (CLP) - We expanded our mentoring programs to the college level. Through a partnership with DeVry University, our CLP mentored computer science students for future success.
    4. Learn by Doing (LBD) - Learning and gaining valuable IT experience by volunteering and participating on a live technical project.
  • Provided 6 timely and meaningful presentations on the latest IT topics and trends.
  • Provided 16 webinars; topics varied from technical to professional development to career advice and selling IT.
  • Hosted the First Annual Black IT Executive Forum - The event focused on senior African American IT professionals (CIOs, Senior VPs, and Group VPs) who served as mentors and inspirations.

We launched our 2012 Student Information Technology Education & Scholarship (SITES) / High School Computer Competition (HSCC) program in January. We trained 15 high school students in HTML, SQL, CSS, MySQL, PHP, Eclipse IDE, project management, oral presentation skills, and teamwork. This year, our students were not only the South Regional Champions, but also, for the first time in 27 years of the HSCC competition, the National Champions! Our students also made history by becoming the first team ever to receive a perfect programming score.

We gave back to the community through various community outreach events and programs. We volunteered at the Norcross Community Co-op Food Bank where we stocked shelves and racks with donated food, clothing and household supplies. We held a back-to-school supplies and canned food drive for The Bridge Builders & Norcross Co-op organizations. Our outreach in the community continued when we got “down and dirty" at the Atlanta Community Food Bank’s community garden and just two weeks ago, we partnered with the North Fulton Community Charities to adopt a family of four for the holidays.

With the generosity and support of sponsors, BDPA members and the community, we were able to uphold our focus of ‘Building and Growing a Stronger BDPA’ in the Atlanta area and we are counting on your support, AGAIN, in 2013!

Wishing You and Your Family a Happy and Safe Holiday!

As we all know in sports, the 4th Quarter is the last and most crucial time of the game; if you haven't brought it by now, you better step up your game or if you are barely ahead of the competition, you gotta stay in it, to win it. Read more »

BDPA Atlanta Chapter Board of Directors (2013)

I tend to believe that BDPA Atlanta is a frontrunner for the 'Chapter of the Year' award that will be given out on August 17, 2013 in Washington DC. If it happens then it will be the result of some remarkable volunteer leaders. Please share some love with the 2013 BDPA Atlanta chapter board of directors!
Please share some love with the 2013 BDPA Atlanta chapter leadership team. Heck, support the chapter by making a secure online donation towards a college scholarship for next year's HSCC team. Doable?

Message from BDPA Atlanta Chapter President

Year of Atlanta (YOA); Making History!

We kicked off the third quarter making history at the National BDPA Conference in Baltimore, MD. I am very honored and proud to announce the BDPA Atlanta High School Computer Competition (HSCC) Team won 1st Place in the 2012 national HSCC championship!

Our students made several historical moments with this win. In the 27 years of the competition, the first time
  • Atlanta has won 1st place,
  • a team received a perfect score on programming,
  • a person has won 1st place as a student and a coordinator; Wesley Williams!

On behalf of the Student Program of BDPA Atlanta and the entire BDPA Atlanta chapter, I would like to thank everyone for their support because you helped to make this possible. Our sponsors and individual donors were instrumental in our students attending the national competition this year. The chapter looks forward to everyone’s continued support in the upcoming years.

Felicia Jones

We continued making history by continuing to provide more webinars than any other chapter. In this quarter, we provided webinars on 3FE, Entrepreneurship, Software Engineering in Aerospace, The State of BDPA, and HSCC-Recap of 2012 National Conference. Attendees learned how to: Lock That Job with using the 3FE approach with Derrick Brown; Start and maintain an IT business and determining if entrepreneurship is really for them with Chiadi Obi; develop software in safety critical systems like an airplane with Alphonse Porter; The Atlanta Leadership Team also presented The State of BDPA, a mid-year year in review, openly discussing our roadmap, accomplishments, and failures; and the instructors, volunteers, parents and students of the HSCC team discussed their experiences at the 2012 National BDPA Conference. At our monthly program meeting in September, we continued to educate our members and future members on Big Data with Dr. Craig Brown leading an informative lecture and discussion on the trend of interacting with big data in the IT world.

Macy's Systems & Technology gave everyone an opportunity to wind down by sponsoring a Summer Mixer at Abbotts Old Towne Tavern & Grill. We had a great evening of networking. Our members and guests also had the opportunity to 'give back' through our community outreach event, by donating back-to-school supplies and providing canned food for The Bridge Builders & Norcross Co-op organizations. Our outreach in the community continued as we got “down and dirty" at Atlanta Community Food Bank’s community garden. The Food Bank supports a wide range of people in need, from children to the working poor. Food pantries, community kitchens, childcare centers, night shelters, and senior centers are among the agencies that receive products from the organization; and provide food and other critical resources for low-income Georgians who suffer from hunger and food insecurity.

Our final historical moment was when Next Level Technology Foundation hosted the inaugural Black IT Executive Forum as a fundraising event for BDPA - HSCC. The event was the first of its kind in Atlanta, focusing on senior African American IT professionals and their journey to their current roles. The panelists were Monique Berry (President, NBDPA), Michael Fisher (SVP, Ceridian), Derek Johnson (CIO, SED International), Curtis Rawlings (Interim CIO, DeKalb County), Darius Jackson Ryals (GVP, Wyndham Worldwide), Lee Scott (VP,Macy’s Systems & Technology) and moderated by Mike Williams (SVP. FIS & Director, BDPA South Region); they served as mentors and inspirations. The event raised $2,700; $1,400 for BDPA and $1,300 for HSCC.

I know I wrote in the paragraph above ‘final historical moment’, but if you don’t know anything about the Atlanta Leadership team, please know this: Nothing is EVER ‘final’ with us. Besides, we have another quarter to go ... YOA!

The guests on the October 9th show:
Felicia Jones - Chapter President, BDPA Atlanta - Felicia is a manager for Macy’s Systems and Technology. More importantly (for our purposes), she is the dynamic president of BDPA Atlanta Chapter. Felicia has done some remarkable things in the first nine months of her presidential tenure. Her chapter's young people won the 2012 national BDPA High School Computer Competition championship earlier this year. More importantly, her chapter provides more professional development programs and webinars than any other chapter in the nation. BDPA Atlanta is making a strong push to become the next 'chapter of the year'. Felicia is in position to share her insights and 'best practice' tips with our listeners. Her twitter handle is @AtlantaBDPA

Deena Pierrot - Chief Executive Officer, Mosaic Blueprint - Deena is a longtime BDPA supporter. In fact, she is trying to establish a BDPA chapter in the untapped market of the northwest United States. She has been a BDPA conference presenter and is actively engaged in diversity recruitment efforts. Recently, Deena took steps to implement her dream with the creation of the iUrban Teen Summit (www.iurbantech.com). The iUrban Teen Tech Summit brings together under-served, underrepresented and unengaged teens in an all-day, technology-focused event held on various university campuses. The events are informational, engaging and most of all fun. We look forward to hearing his story on the BDPA iRadio Show. Her twitter handle is @MosaicBlueprint
We hope you enjoy the insights and commentary on the show from each of these guests. Please take a moment to post a comment to let us know that you care!

BDPA Marketing Tips Shared by Atlanta Chapter President Felicia Jones

How often have we heard the statement that 'BDPA is the best-kept secret in the Information Technology industry' or 'BDPA is the best-kept secret in the Black community'. I've noticed that BDPA Atlanta chapter has stepped up their marketing over the past year and as a result the chapter is one of the fastest-growing in the nation.

I reached out to BDPA Atlanta chapter president Felicia Jones with this question:
If you had to share insights into the 'best practices' of marketing experienced by your BDPA Atlanta chapter this year ... what would they be? What are the top 2-3 things that you would suggest for other local chapter leaders to think about or do in their efforts to raise the level of marketing and awareness of BDPA in the other 44 chapter cities around the nation?

Her answer provides a road-map for all of us in BDPA:
  1. Social media; the #1 marketing tool...period! From FB to LinkedIn to Twitter and all the other tools, you can reach millions of people in an instance. With today's technology & devices, people are always connected and plugged in. Atlanta was already using social media, but we had to come up with attention grabbers & catch phrases that would get people's attention to make them want to know more.
  2. Website; current with substance. Using social media to market your chapter is meaningless if you don't have a website, but a website with info, events, programs, etc. If you don't have one for your local chapter, use Nationals; every chapter has the capability to create a site within national's website. Atlanta had to update our website; the look, the feel, the info. We needed to tell a story and have people wanting to learn more about the organization and to also want to be a part of it. You must have events listed even if you are sharing events from another chapter (like webinars) or partnering with another organization on their event.
  3. Email Communication; tried & true. Email is the best form of communication to send out detailed information, but watch the frequency of emails, you don't want to be categorized as spam. Atlanta changed the look of our emails to incorporate better graphics, catch phrases & the frequency for which we sent out the info. We actually have people responding to the emails with great comments! We send out an email at the beginning of the month that summarizes all the upcoming events for that month, as the date gets closer to the event, we send out another email.
  4. Word of Mouth; the best form of communication. If you are providing great programs & quality events, people will begin to talk and spread the word for you. Atlanta introduced several new programs for its members along with having several networking events. There were several new faces & they said they heard about us from a friend, friend of a friend, co-worker, etc.
  5. Within all of those four avenues of marketing, we had to change our look and approach. We had to be creative and come up with new marketing material such as video. You can write, tweet, blast, and list as much info as you like, but there's nothing better than actually seeing/hearing someone give a testimonial, tell a story or provide info so we got creative with video. We have our own YouTube channel where you can view our Real Talk Series, The Speaker Behind the Topic, testimonial videos, interviews of our HSCC students & instructors, and much, much more.

What are your thoughts on Felicia's marketing tips? Do you have other 'best practices' about marketing of BDPA programs that you want to share with us?
